CANCELLED: Nordic Film Series to feature Finnish historical drama on March 12

Updated 3/12/20: With the primary concern of patron safety, the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series screening for today is cancelled.

A Finnish film based on the infamous witch hunts in the Nordic countries in the 1600s is the March selection for the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series. Screenings will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

2nd annual Kalevalathon to be held on Feb. 28

Kalevalathon is back again for another year. Join students and faculty in celebration of Kalevala Day on Friday, February 28 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center as they read the Finnish epic poem, the Kalevala.

Mark Munger to visit North Wind Books January 25

On Saturday, January 25 author of “Suomalaiset“, Mark Munger will be visiting North Wind Books for a book signing and author discussion.

Munger recently released the final book in his historical trilogy, Kotimaa. In his new release, readers follow immigrant Anders Alhomaki on his journey from Finland to Minnesota in the 1890s to Finland’s Centennial Independence Day.

Finnish American Heritage Center to host Finnish fiddling workshops in January

The Community Pelimannit, a series of six Finnish fiddling workshops, will be held January 6–23, 2020, hosted by Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center.

Finlandia University has received one of its most significant endowment gifts to date from the estate of Onni and Dorothea Harju.

Like many other Finnish American men, Onni grew up on a farm with very humble beginnings. Through his lifetime of hard work and investment – which included growing Christmas trees on the Red Granite, Wisconsin farmland – Onni planted his strong Finnish roots by investing in the future.

Nordic Film Series kicks off new season with suspenseful Finnish movie

The new season of the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series kicks off next week with a film that sets the mood as Halloween approaches.

The new season gets under way Thursday, October 10 with 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. screenings of the suspenseful Finnish film “Anselmi – nuori ihmissusi” (Anselm – the Young Werewolf) a 2014 film by directors Sami Palolampi and Matti Pekkanen.

Free Skin Cancer Screening

Dr. Soderberg, dermatologist, will be conducting a free skin cancer screening on May 25th at the Finnish American Heritage Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. The Finlandia University Student Nurses’ Association as well as Dr. Soderberg and his team will be on site to conduct the exams and help you through the process.
